Theory of Power
America currently wants to be an ideal democracy that can best be described by pluralism, however, our current power is to corrupt to be considered pluralism. Our current power is bestly described as  bureaucratic elitism. The theory of bureaucratic elitism was developed by Max Weber and is the belief that the government, institution, and nongovernmental business are dominated and or controlled by large bureaucracies. The government agencies that are created are then largely controlled by the large bureaucracies group who operate on a daily bias. Their decisions are made to benefit them first not the people they represent.
I believe this is the type of the current power and one example of this is  uneven wealth  distribution  between the nation. According to the New York Times, the richest 1% of the wealthiest  part of the country currently owns more wealth than the bottom 90% of the country. This involves almost all of the country. Also, The bottom 90% of the country holds 73% of the country’s debt. This means the poorest of our country holds almost ¾ of our country’s debt. Since, the ¾ of the country pays more than the rch they are all in debt for the most part.
Much of the current President, Donald Trump’s cabinet was not even elected by the people but they also used to work for large bureaucratic groups. For example Rex W. Tillerson, secretary of State, was the former CEO of Exxon Mobile. At one point of time Rex Tillerson was head of a large bureaucratic group and now has an important role in government. Has CEO he controlled the gas prices for  many Americans. He has no government or political experience, but he was still nominated for the job. However, it brings to question whether or not he was nominated for the job due to his close relationship with Donald Trump himself Ben Carson a former neurosurgeon who also ran for the 2016 presidential election was chosen by Donald Trump to now be  the Secretary of Housing and Urban Development. However, during the primaries Donald Trump made several comments about Ben Casrson and why he should not be working in government or as president. Donald Trump made a comment about his experience being,”I think Ben just doesn’t have the experience. It’s not his thing, you know you’re born with it. It’s just his thing. He doesn’t have the temperament for it.” This quote raises a question between what Donald truly means by “being born with it” since he is no stranger to racial comments. Also questions why Donald Trump would offer Ben Carson the job in the beginning since he believe that he has no experience. As well as this line of working not being fitting for Ben Carson. Another cabinet member that was not elected by the people and has no political background being Steve Mnuchin the Secretary of Treasury. Steve Mnuchin also has no experience in setting macroeconomic policy. However, he did become close with Donald Trump when he was in charge of Donald Trump’s fundraising during his presidential campaign. Again this cabinet member has no political experience, yet was chosen by Donald Trump and is a close friend of his. However, Donald Trump has the power to nominate and but his friends in government. He even nominated the very controversial  Betsy Devos, a billionaire republican donor, as the Secretary of Education.  She has spent most of her adult life working to destroy public education. By 2021 only a projected 9% of all students will be in private schools while 91% of all students will be in public schools. Besty’s work to destroy 91% of children’s futures that will be in public school systems. Much of the population, especially  the lower socio economic class, can not afford to send their children of private schools and public schools are the best chance for those children to receive an education. Besty Devos comes from the rich affluent community and her decision to give private schools more attention and destroy public schools only helps the rich community by allowing them to send their children to better private schools. She is a firm believer that the more money you have the better schools you should have. However, this is unfair to the rest of the country that is not rich and or inherited money from their family. But, she is just looking out for the wealthy and herself not the people of the U.S. Many of Donald Trump’s cabinet are wealthy, and or business owners that are making decisions to help themselves first and then the people of the United States. These are just some of the many reasons and ways that America is a bureaucratic elitism power.
