This evening, President Trump will make a speech on sending about 4,000 more troops to Afghanistan. He previously opposed to this idea, but since the war over there is not going as planned, he has no choice. The 3 choices that were available were send more troops, get them out, or replace US troops with private contractors. The final decision, obviously, is to send in more troops.
Before becoming president, Trump wrote Tweets about getting the troops out of Afghanistan such as "we have wasted an enormous amount of blood and treasure in Afghanistan. Their government has zero appreciation." Also, agreeing with Obama, he said "we should have a speedy withdrawal" and stop "wasting our money.”
During the speech tonight, he is “asking the region to do more.” He is specifically asking for India and Pakistan to bring the Taliban to the table. David Bossie told Fox and Friends that he thinks Trump is doing this “to give [his generals] a chance to prove what they want and their strategy” (Fox News).
The reason why I chose this topic is because Trump has had some heat in the past few weeks, and I feel like this might give him some positive feedback. I recently just watched the speech and he’s given his word to help keep America safe (as always) and keep the Taliban/al-Qaeda away from our country. The troops even said that this is the speech that they wanted to hear. It has given them confidence and courage to go in and fight for us. This is probably one of the hardest decisions he has made so far in his presidency. He has a solid plan in order to win and end this war.

Discussion Questions:
-Do you agree with Trump? Is it worse to send them in since it means more troops are at risk?
-In the situation right now, do you think it's better to send them in or get them out?
-Why is he NOW choosing to change his mind and send more troops in danger?
-Do you agree with Trump's speech and strategy?
