Both Korean leaders, US signal turn to diplomacy amid crisis

I chose to post about this topic because this is a major change to all of the threats that have been given by both the United States and North Korea, and I would like to hear other opinions on this topic. Many have heard about North Korea's recent nuclear developments, tests and plan to launch a missile in the water off the coast of Guam. Upon receiving this information, Trump spoke up reporting that the United States was," Locked and Loaded" and that he would deliver' "Fire and fury" if North Korea threatened the United States any more. Just recently Kim Jong Un declared that,"he would watch the 'foolish and stupid conduct of the Yankees' a little more before deciding whether to order the missile test." This means that he will hold off on firing the missile at Guam and will watch the behavior of the United States more closely instead. Even South Korea is adding input. South Korean President Moon said that
“Our government will put everything on the line to prevent another war on the Korean Peninsula." Proving that this conflict between North Korea and the United States will effect many more places other than those two countries. Although Kim Jong Un has delayed his plans, it doesn't mean he has cancelled them, causing his previous threats to remain an issue.

Questions for discussion:
Do you think the United States or North Korea will be first to make the next move?
Do you think the United States will make violent actions?
Do you think Kim Jong Un will carry out his plans in the future?

Do you think things will remain nonviolent for long?

  1. I think North Korea will strike first with violent actions against the U.S. and it’s allies. Trump has made it clear that he would be doing only what benefits the U.S. and the safety of the country is definitely in his best interest. If the U.S. strikes first, a major war is likely to start. A world war is not in the U.S.’s best interests. North Korea has been threatening the world for years with bomb threats, and Kim Jong Un has really portrayed himself as unstable to not only the U.S. but also to South Korea, Japan, and the rest of the world. Let’s not forget that North Korea is a communist country, and the people do not have a say in any of these bold decisions. He has a very large ego and will do anything in his power to protect that ego of not only him but his country. He has been testing nuclear weapons in the ocean for many years, leaving the world to ask themselves what is North Korea capable of? What does this country want? The answer has been unclear, because the threats and weapon testing have never stopped. The U.S. has done little to nothing in the past to put a stop to the fear that North Korea has been stirring. Bush’s actions were ineffective, and Obama and the rest of the world increased sanctions against them, which did not stop the threats. Maybe North Korea could want the sanctions lifted? Perhaps they want money? Maybe their goal is to dodge the possibility that South Korea will be backed up by the rest of the world in uniting Korea. We do not know when we will find out what they want in the end of all of this chaos. However, the U.S. is easily the most powerful country in the world, so North Korea might want to be wary about threatening anything too serious or bombing a specific area. A missile from either of the countries can start another major war, which is why so many people are worried about the threats from both sides. If North Korea does make the first move in this situation, the U.S. will definitely make the next move to protect themselves and their allies.

  2. I think the United States will be the first to make the next move because Trump said “fire and fury” but the main point is that North Korea already made a clear statement with all those missiles test and strategies how to attack. I think the U.S is about to take the next step because after all the listening about North Korea actions then the president hopefully will come up with a plan and put an end in North Korea. The United States will create/take a violent action when it’s the right time because the president said if the situation gets out of hands then “fire & fury” will occur. In general, I believe that safety is our first priority but we can’t wait to the last minute to make a strategic move can lead to a bad conflict but it’s better to clear out the issue than wait for the end of the world to occur. I believe Kim Jong Un will not carry out his plans in the future because, after all the crisis around the world, the missile's test cost money but also the “fire and fury” will be dangerous. My view on this topic in overall is that everyone is trying to scare each other until the US takes things to another level or vice versa. In conclusion, I believe things will not remain nonviolent for long because North Korea is pushing the limits and the US will take actions to protect our citizens and territory.

  3. I believe the North Korea will make the first move because whether you like Trump or not, he's a smart man and wouldn't engage into a conflict if he didnt have a legitamate reason. Yes, North Korea has threatened the US several times but have yet to actually attack. Its a possibility that Trump could make the first move but if done so, he must be certain that North Korea is going to attack. Though i do not believe the US will engage in this conflict first, if North Korea was to attack, Trump would no doubt come back with "fire and fury" to defend our country. Which is highly likely because Kim Jong Un will eventually carry out his plans. Maybe not on the US, but Guam for example, but he still doesn't want matters to remain peaceful.

  4. I believe that North Korea will be the first to strike because, agreeing with Collin, Trump is smart enough to not put us in danger and strike first. He’s trying to avoid a war with NK, but will do anything to protect the country. He doesn’t have a reason to even start a war with them. Kim Jong Un is the one who has been threatening the US for years, but still has yet to advance. Right now both countries (mostly NK) are just using words to threaten each other; there’s no real action just yet. If Trump were to strike first, it would be an unavoidable threat or impending attack. I believe we will not engage on this conflict first. Kim Jong Un is powerful, yet crazy enough to carry out his plans. It is clear that he does not want matters to remain peacefully. Right now, threatening words are flying through the air. But once the missiles start to fly towards our country, we will be ready. Trump has the country “locked and loaded” and is ready to shoot down anything that they throw up. Like I said, if anything NK will be the first to strike because Trump does not want to engage in a military conflict if it's unnecessary.
