Coal Mining

The Trump administration has recently been pushing for an increase in coal mining out on federal lands. The coal mining would be helping the US coal industry and gaining profits for the country. However there are environmental risks to the coal mines as they expand further towards private lands. Exports have also been blocked by environmentalists looking for cleaner energy sources and trying to cut down on coal. Other issues include the fact that the lands are public and are damaging to the American lands, getting rid of a historical part of America. Federal coal mines do leave behind polluted lands and can account for 10% of the US's greenhouse gas production.

In addition to the Environmental distress that these new mines can cause there is also many economic issues. Mines on federal lands are required to pay "no less than" 12.5% of their sales in royalties. 85% of the coal that is produced comes from the Powder River Basin this can cause pollution which can cause environmentalist agencies to ban a trade on imports and exports in certain countries overall causing a decrease in profit. The US coal industry also has to compete with the other global suppliers to Asian power plants. For now there is an increase in exports from the Powder River Basin and an expected increase from the country as a whole.

Questions:

  • Should the US invest in its coal industry?
  • What environmental effects could this have?
  • Should the Federal government mine on the public lands?
