The Free Speech Rally In Boston

I'm sure most of you have heard about what's going on with the white supremacists, kkk members and neo Nazis. In Boston on Saturday August 19th, there were peaceful protesters that came to spread love, instead of hate. Saturday, August 12th, there was a hate rally in Charlottesville, Virginia. Members of the kkk, neo Nazis and white supremacists held up confederate flags and flags with swastikas. There were many symbols of hate being shown in that hate rally and a car rammed through counter protesters. There are now many counter protesters to these hate movements, so in Boston people were protesting against the racism and hate, and promoting equality and love.

I chose this topic as my current event because it's brave to protest against violent hate. Especially the weekend after a violent hate rally. This topic is also very interesting.

I have two articles and 4 discussion questions to share with you.

Discussion Questions:
1. Do you think this situation with hate against counter protesters will cause another civil war?

2. Do you think the counter protesters are doing the right thing?

3. Should people fight for what they believe in, or does protesting make everything worse?

4. What can our country do to unite more, rather than spread hate and racism?

  1. I think the current situation between hate and counter protest may get out of hands at times for sure, however, I do not see it growing to becoming a Civil war. As these conflicts gain more publicity it will also attract more attention from authority figures like police that will then be stationed at these protest to stop any violence that can be started during them. With police help I believe the conflict will be under control before it turns into a civil war especially as time goes on it will lose popularity and attention from people and protesters. I agree with counter protesters peaceful protest of spreading love and kindness. These counter protest are speaking their mind and opinions just like the hateful protest. I think this is a great use of the counter protesters right for a peaceful protest. I believe people should always fight for what matters, however, they should use their words rather than their fists. A peaceful protest does not hurt someone but rather spread your ideas and beliefs. A violent protest just brings out violence and hate that loses attention on what people are protesting and gets more attention for the violence that takes place there. This will make the situation worse because you are not spreading your beliefs instead you are spreading violence. There will always be violent and racist people in this world and it is their right to speak for it and for people's right to speak out against it. However, if we chose to speak our beliefs peaceful and accept each others beliefs whether we agree or not maybe it will allow us to unite more as a country.
