Sanctions On Venezuelan President

Why is this happening?
Over the past couple of years the people  of Venezuela have been upset with the leadership there. The people have been protesting against their president Nicolas Maduro because of the corruption and overall disruption of the country (changing their country for the worse).  People opposing him have branded him or labeled him as a dictator based off his actions. Maduro had increased military action within the country to fend off  "what he described as US backed attempts to create chaos and overthrow him". While the US had only made a statement prior in support of the protesters cause, and saying that they should do so non violently As all of this has been happening, over 100 people have died, and countless arrested.

 What is being done?
The Treasury department of the United states has put sanctions on president Maduro, cutting off any of his assets in the US and any US citizens from doing business with him, as well as 13 senior Venezuelan officials. The US has considered putting broader sanctions on the country as a whole, specifically to the Venezuelan oil industry, but that could cripple their already failing economy. Locals in Venezuela are happy that the US is finally doing something to help them and their county.

Why is this topic important?
Its important for the us to take some form of action along with other country's to stop "tyrants". There has been many deaths during president Maduro's time in office. This helps us understand foreign policies between nations, and how they effect each other without armed conflict.

Questions
  • Was this a good decision to put sanctions on president Maduro?
  • Do you think this was enough or should there be tougher actions taken into play against president Maduro?
  • Should the US have taken the actions they did sooner?
  • Should the US have just stayed out of it and not done anything to help the people of Venezuela?

  1. I think putting sanctions on president Maduro was a good decision. The people of Venezuela are unhappy with his leadership and he is starting to be looked at as a dictator. By freezing his assets with the United States we are shown against the policies of his regimes and supporting the people of Venezuela. As of if there should be tougher actions made against him, I don’t think there should be just yet. The US doesn’t need another conflict especially with bad tensions with Maduro already. I do agree that if the violence keeps happening between the protesters and police more action will be needed. The casualties are at 108 people from the protests, and this should be stopped.

    1. I agree with Lauren on this because you don't want a leader who seems like a dictator and the priority of a country is to have a good leader who everyone likes, and if people are unhappy, then there should be something done with it. Such as what Maduro has done. There should be more action and affects if violence keeps occurring but if the leadership starts and continues to rise as a good thing, then tougher actions would no longer be needed in my opinion, agreeing with Lauren.

  2. It is a good idea to have placed those sanctions on Maduro, because it will help keep him from growing more powerful, which would lead to more suffering by the Venezuelan people. I think that the current sanctions are good enough, and by adding more, we risk damaging Venezuela's entire economy and population. Doing these sanctions sooner might not have changed much, and it would have been hard to pass the sanctions because a while ago, he was not bad enough to impose sanctions harsh enough to have an affect on him. It is good that we are getting involved, because without our interjection, the situation would get worse, and the people of Venezuela do not deserve that.

  3. I also agree that it was a good decision to put sanctions on President Maduro. The US clearly showed how they feel about the issues occurring and about how Maduro is deciding to control them. Now that the US has stated their opinion hopefully Maduro will understand why we have froze our assets and reconsider how he is running the country and listen to the people hd is ruling. After all he is supposed to be doing things that benefit them. Also it is better that we put sanctions on Maduro sooner than later because if we had waited the country's problems would increase and Maduro would be using our assets for things we do not support. All in all I agree with both Lauren and Dan that it was a good decision to put sanctions on Maduro.

  4. It was a good idea to put sanctions on president Maduro to stop or at least control his tyrantry in that country and putting wider sanctions onto more of the corrupt poloticians could help with Venezuala's issue even better. Of course causing or helping protests against him should be decided and in no way influenced by the US. The possibility of helping Venezuala financially through some smaller acts however could gain us an ally and could bring stability to that nation. Staying out of the matter entirely wouldn't have helped them though it couldn't have hurt them either. overall helping them could greatly improve their lives and it is for the greater good.
