Trumps Proposed Health Care Bill Collapses

"The bill is dead." said a CNN news reporter early this morning. As of last night, the attempt to repeal and replace the Affordable Care Act came to a screeching halt. Two Republican Senators Jerry Moran of Kansas and Mike Lee of Utah vowed to vote against the latest draft of the GOP's health care bill. Lee said the bill "doesn't go far enough in lowering premiums for middle class families; nor does it create enough free space from the most costly Obamacare regulations." Moran also states they need to start fresh, and open up the legislative process. Jerry Moran and Mike Lee tweet about the bill

With 4 votes against the bill, Republican leaders have two options: rewrite the whole bill in hope to secure 50 votes or work with democrats to fix the flaws both parties acknowledge. Senator Majority Leader Mitch McConnell says they were unsuccessful but will not give up on replacing Obamacare. Here is a short video of McConnell giving a statement today:

As Trump's twitter is a topic of discussion lately, this is what he said as a response: "Most Republicans were loyal, terrific & worked really hard," Trump tweeted Tuesday morning. "We were let down by all of the Democrats and a few Republicans." He also tweeted, "As I have always said, let Obamacare fail and then come together and do a great health care plan. Stay tuned!" Trump had also given  a statement that he is "very disappointed" with bills failure.

Obviously, this event is updating all day and all week. Keep up with CNN or other news outlets to get the most current updates.

Discussion questions:

  • Did you see this coming? Why?
  • Were you surprised Trump's bill failed?
  • Can this possibly create a multiparty approach?
  •   Do you think the attempt to replace Obamacare is dead?
