In Trump's campaign he said he would protect lgbt citizens and that he would protect their rights as human beings. He even made history by being the first republican president to address the lgbt community in his acceptance speech. However, in his 7 months in office he has done absolutely nothing for this community.
On his first day in office, the lgbt rights page was taken off of the official white house website. Here is a link further discussing that issue:
In more current events, last month (June) was pride month, where we celebrate the struggles of the lgbt community and recognize how far our country has come - and how far we still have to go. Every year Obama made a proclamation addressing this month. Trump however, did not say anything about it and decided to keep quiet about the whole celebration, ending the eight-year tradition. Here are a few articles explaining this:
Buzzfeed took it upon themselves to email the white house asking about if Trump will make any announcement, and well, here are the results:
Also, the picture at the top of this post had many people talking earlier due to the fact that he is holding it upside down. People were mad that he didn't have the decency to hold it the right way and said it was equal to holding the American flag upside down.
So I would love to hear what you all have to say about this. Here are some questions to think and discuss about.
Do you think Trump cares about the lgbt community or he lied to try to get their votes?
Do you think it was ok for Trump to not address pride month?
Do you think Trump will ever decide to start talking more about lgbt issues?
What are your overall opinions on pride month? Should it even be addressed by the white house?
Addressing the picture at the top, do you think that it is right that people got mad? Was this picture due to Trump being ignorant or just an innocent mistake?
Trump has a lot of time on his hands sometimes. Time in which he uses primarily to golf and compose ignorant tweets. You would think that if he really cared about the LGBTQ community, he would have at least mentioned the fact that it was pride month. Since it wasn't brought up at all with a whole month to do so, it must have been intentional. He must have decided to disregard the significance of the month of June. Although this isn't a requirement of the President, it wasn't necessarily okay for him to push aside the community like that. It can be considered rude and hurtful for the leader of our country to do so.
ReplyDeleteIn my opinion, pride month is wonderful. It's the perfect time for LGBTQ people to express themselves and take PRIDE for who they are. They deserve it after such a long history of not being accepted. It's really a great thing, which makes it worthy of (at least) a mention from Donald Trump.
