Trump's Poor Approval Rating

When Donald Trump first announced he was running for president in June of 2015, many Americans did not believe he would make it far. His many radical and insulting remarks put people off. Surprisingly, it was his rude comments that attracted his support, who labeled his remarks as “just being honest”. Many were shocked when Trump won the Republican nomination in July 2016, and were even more shocked when he unexpectedly won the presidency.

After Trump was first inaugurated, his approval rating was only at about 45%. This set a new low for inaugural approval ratings. On the 100 day mark his approval rating decreased to 42%.

More recently, a Washington Post/ABC News Poll was released showing that Trump has the lowest approval rating after 6 months of any president in the past 70 years, at 36%. In this poll 58% disapproved, where 48% of participants disapproved strongly. Only 25% of those polled approved strongly of Trump. Trump commented on the poll by tweeting “The ABC/Washington Post Poll, even though almost 40% is not bad at this time, was just about the most inaccurate poll around election time!” However, the Washington Post/ABC News poll during the election was not inaccurate to the general election, and was only off by 2.5% for Trump’s results.

Here is a graph comparing Trump's approval rate to previous presidents.

The poll also showed that many Americans have a lack of confidence in Trump. Only 34% of participants said that they “trust Trump a great deal” when dealing with foreign affairs, while 47% said they do not trust him dealing with them. This could perhaps be related to the Russia scandal.

Obviously one poll cannot be used to estimate how well Trump is doing, so here are a few more that show how low Trump's approval rating is:

Here is a short video that summarizes and gives more insight on the issue (Watch until 2 minutes):

  • Does it matter that Trump's approval rating is so low? Why or why not?
  • What could Trump do to possibly improve his rating?
  • Do you think Trump's Russia scandal affected his approval rating? Why or why not?
