American Political Culture: Conflictual or Consensual?

Is the American Political Culture Classified as Conflictual or Consensual?

This picture shows how America has divided from all these differences in class, gender, race and political beliefs.

Americas political culture can mostly be classified as conflictal. In the Article "One Nation, Slightly Divisible" by David Brooks, he mentions the very obvious differences between Red and Blue America. Red America is stereotypically known to be filled with millions of mostly white, lower income, traditional, patriotic, racist and homophobic people. On the other hand however,  Brooks writes that Blue America is modernized and diverse, with higher education and greater income.  Although he mainly mentions stereotypes, and even though not everyone from the Red and Blue America necessarily fit these categories, these stereotypes clearly specify that there are many differences between the two. Instantly, people can see that there would be issues and divisions between Red and Blue Americans concerning their beliefs and opinions.

Following the 2016 presidential elections, the country is starting to divide. Everyone has different opinions on everything and many people are in great disagreement. Problems such as abortion,  same-sex marriage and immigration are some of the topics the two different "Americas" disagree on.

This cartoon symbolizes the disagreements between the two political parties.

Concerning many disputes between Red and Blue America, in the video "Crossfire: The Great Divide," minimum wage is an issue that is discussed. The governor of Texas, Rick Perry says that the republican, or "red" states think that the minimum wage should not be raised. On the contrary, the governor of Illinois, Patrick Quinn, says that democratic or "blue"  states think that the minimum wage should certainly be raised because it will produce more jobs that will help people such as parents, to aid and provide for their families with a stable and reasonable income. Consequently, this is only one out of the many current examples of how disagreement between the two parties and states causes dispute. These conflicts will only continue to grow as time moves on.
